The subtle change in the punctuation of non-capitalized Whites to “Whites” is significant. It is comparable to the transition from gods to God. White people suddenly become a proper noun, they are now considered superior enough to constitute such a consciousness of their greatness. White people also become more impersonal by being accorded a more celestial status. In the passage, this happens right after the tone shifts from revulsion of white people to love for them. This reinforces the depth of the tonal shift that occurs within Tambu’s character. In a separate note, the reader gets a glimpse of the tension between the current Tambu and the future Tambu. At the beginning of the passage, there is a small insert that censures Tambu's current opinion. This is also where the confrontation between youth and superiority takes place. Immaturity versus superiority is not just between the whites and the Tambu, it is between the two Tambus. One of the most prevalent problems in this passage is the duality between the present Tambu and the future Tambu.
