  • Essay / Where have all the leaders gone - 927

Where have all the leaders gone? What does each of us give back to our country? Do we really love democracy? Are we too fat and too complacent for our own good? Are we really concerned about the future of our children? And who will save the middle class? These are all difficult questions examined in Lee Iacocca's Where Have All the Leaders Gone? An autodidact who many Americans once hoped would run for president, Iacocca saved the Chrysler Corporation from financial ruin, orchestrated the creation of the minivan, and oversaw the renovation of Ellis Island. Iacocca also institutionalized the Lehigh University Institute for Leadership and the Iacocca Foundation, which is dedicated to finding a cure for diabetes in honor of his late wife. Lee firmly believes that leaders are formed in times of crisis, like today. He has known more leaders than anyone—including nine U.S. presidents, numerous heads of state, and the CEOs of the nation's largest companies—and is uniquely adept at sharing his wisdom, knowledge, and wit about American leadership. Will the American middle class realize that they run the country and must speak out? As a student, it is extremely important to understand this because this will be the country of our generations before us! Lee asks us when we will say enough. We complain about the price of gas - which is controlled mainly by five companies, about the war - which is putting us in debt at an alarming rate and which has still not done much, if anything, and above all about the ignorance of the Constitution by our own government. To solve this problem, Mr. Iacocca asks us to test the people we elect to public office using what he calls the “Nine Cs of Leadership.” I believe this philosophy will be extremely useful. So here is list C. A leader must be curious and communicate. All leaders should listen to people outside of what he calls the “Yes, sir” crowd. If we lose the curiosity to explore other philosophies, they will become obsolete. Beliefs must be tested. If not, how do we know if they are right? Leaders must be creative and courageous. What happened to the “think outside the box” philosophy that all American inventors and leaders founded this country on? Everything changes as a biology major, one of the first things learned where the variables or things that change from one trail to another, sometimes you have to get creative and adapt to your environment..
