  • Essay / The importance of the early Christian monk - 902

He refused to give the last pot of oil to a man. Benedict found out he refused and asked the man to throw the oil out the window. The oil didn't break when it fell out the window. A more exquisite part of the story occurs when the lid of the pot began to be lifted and filled with even more oil when Benedict prayed (195). This little story shows that the monk lacked humility. Faith involves having humility towards others. Showing humility is an aspect of the Christian faith. Being considerate of others means putting others first. God blesses those who do this. It's a way of saying that you shouldn't be entirely focused on yourself. Additionally, if a Christian does a good deed, such as giving oil to man, God will provide something instead. By having faith in prayer, an individual can come to the conclusion that everything will be okay. This even applies to the future state of Christianity itself. Christians are continually threatened and many temples were destroyed during the time of the monks. Antoine has in his life a vision of “heathens” attacking Catholic temples (61). Even though, in this very vision, he knows that more tyranny is to come. The fight for our Christian brothers will never end. It's not completely over until their savior comes for them.
