Learning about society has been a lifelong commitment that I have held since I was a child. Growing up in inner city Dayton, Ohio helped me understand that there is something wrong within society. Poor people are often marginalized and this becomes a vicious circle of social disparity. However, I have always been inspired by people who were agents of change. The most profound discovery I have made in my life is purpose; in fact, the purpose takes into account the intrinsic values that were instilled in me regarding helping others. I want to serve something better than myself and I can't think of any better sacrifice I've made in my life. After completing my Associates Degree in Mental Health Technology and Chemical Dependency Counseling, it was time to move on. The memories and experiences from my field placements made me realize that this was my goal. These encounters and experiences I had while serving and helping others were a feeling that pushed me to pursue my studies in social work. I believe I am well equipped for higher education. Throughout my undergraduate studies, I gained essential foundational knowledge by taking advanced courses in the fields of psychology and sociology, including research methods, statistics, human behavior, and generalist practice at micro, mezzo and macro levels. I have many ideas that I am determined to cultivate in social work with children and families. But, more importantly, I have a strong desire to help people who deserve my compassion, respect and attention, and to be appreciated in society as human beings. I strongly believe that my decision to continue my education at Ohio State will be beneficial in better understanding and practicing basic skills related to social work. With a long and rich tradition of social work at OSU, dating back to 1875, I would like to play an active role in the mission of the Social Work Department. Therefore, I would be very grateful if you consider my application so that I have the opportunity to study in one of the best universities..
