Essay / System Development Life Cycle - 1107
Computer system plays an important role in solving human problems in their daily lives. There are standard steps for developing an information system called the System Development Life Cycle (SDLC). SDLC is the framework available to build a complete system. The SDLC has five phases: planning, analysis, design, coding, testing, and maintenance (see Figure 1 in Appendix 1). The first phase of the SDLC is planning. In this phase, the potential system development project is identified. The project manager summarizes all possible strengths and weaknesses through his professional skills (Hoffer, George and Valacich, 2008). Next, the business plan is defined and documented by the project manager in a formal format. According to Burch (1992), the business plan should be clear and the development of the system should follow the business objective. During this phase, the project is selected and decided based on a stakeholder meeting with the project manager. After that, the selected project is launched. “At launch, one or more analysts are responsible for working with the client to establish work standards and a communication procedure” (Hoffer, George, and Valacich, 2012, p. 116). During this stage, extensive information is obtained to support project planning based on the determined project scope and identify project activities arising from ongoing client meetings. Finally, before moving on to the next phase; The Basic Project Plan (BPP) and Project Scope Statement (PSS) are documented based on information obtained from previous activities that inform the system (Hoffer, George, and Valacich, 2012). The second phase of the SDLC is analysis. The analysis is performed to "gather information about what the system should do from as many resources as possible" (Hoffer, ...... middle of article ......
