Essay / The Book Summary Highly Illogical Behavior
In the book “Highly Illogical Behavior” by John Whaley, some of the central conflicts the characters faced were mental illness, questionable plans, and the love triangle. It all begins with a teenager named Solomon Reed, who suffers from agoraphobia, the fear of any type of difficult situation, due to an unfortunate event that happened three years prior. In eighth grade, he stripped naked and lowered himself into the school fountain, which completely embarrassed him and led to him being locked in his house for three years, two months and a day. He thought this would be his whole life, but all that was about to change when he met Lisa Praytor and Clark Robbins. Say no to plagiarism. Lisa was first introduced to Solomon. His main plan was to befriend Solomon in hopes of gaining his experience with mental illness, writing his college essay, and somehow helping him face the outside world . Soon after, Clark was introduced and sooner or later they became best friends. The couple managed to help Solomon overcome his fear and go out into the swimming pool in the garden. However, as Clark and Solomon spend almost all their time together, Lisa becomes concerned that the guys are gay for each other and even gives Solomon the wrong idea about Clark. Solomon is gay and in love with Clark, but Clark's feelings are not the same. it's not reciprocal. A few weeks later, after the night of Solomon's meltdown, during which Lisa and Clark confessed about his college assignment and how he felt used, Solomon's grandmother was in a car accident. That's when a true friendship was born and Lisa and Clark were there to help Solomon get out of the house to visit his grandmother in the hospital. In the end, the event showed the true value of friendships and how they can be another source of help for people suffering from mental illness. Whaley reveals how important it is to understand people with mental illness and the moral support they need. It also reveals misunderstandings about mental illness through different character perspectives and the importance of what makes friendship last, forgiveness. The combination of the two, mental illness and friendship, creates an incredible storyline, as some people find comfort in friends and even consider them family..
