This is because the government holds the power to carry out the administrative functions of a state, which means that an individual has minimal bargaining power. All types of liberalism are based on this aspect of democracy. Examples include classical liberalism and modern American liberalism. Classical liberalism is based on limiting the power of the state. (Hansen 1). This type of liberalism recognizes the state as a powerful being and therefore a threat to individual freedom. On the other hand, modern American liberalism advocates the advancement of social justice and individual rights. (Hansen 1). What the two have in common is the need for mass action to enforce them. Therefore, in order to protect the rights of individuals, people must take it upon themselves to express concern about violations and address risks to their rights.
