Essay / Antigone by Sophocles and Bill Clinton - 1324
Antigone and Bill ClintonAntigone, in Greek legend, was the daughter of Oedipus. When his brothers Eteocles and Polynices killed each other, Creon, king of Thebes, forbade the burial of the rebel Polynices. Antigone disobeyed him, performed the rites and was sentenced to death for what she had done. Now the question arises: “Did Antigone take appropriate action?” ". Was it just to go against the wishes of his uncle Creon and bury the brother who should be left to the vultures? Would it be better to leave the situation as it is? Could she continue to talk about life while trying not to think about how she left her own blood out in the open? Could Antigone act like she didn't care? For the Greeks of the time, life after death was much more important and sacred than life itself. Everything they did while alive was to please the many gods they worshiped. They built temples for their gods, made statues to symbolize their gods, and had a different God to explain things that we now view as an act of mother nature. This may seem rather crazy to us when we study their beliefs and compare them to modern beliefs. I am sure the Greeks would have considered us pagans and put us to death because of our ways and beliefs. I think Antigone thought her action was courageous and worthwhile. I myself would not have risked my life to provide a dignified burial for anyone, whether in modern times or back then. Going against authority and breaking the laws laid down by the monarch was simply a foolish act. When someone is dead, we now know that no one or anything else can do for them at that time. It's a shame the Greeks didn't believe it. As I said before, for the Greeks, life after death was more important than life itself. The Greeks seemed to spend most, if not all, of their lives preparing in one way or another for their afterlife. The lives they led then followed one another to please the Gods. I think she deserved her punishment because she knew what fate would come of her actions. Just because Antigone thought she was doing the right thing doesn't mean it was the right thing..
