Volvo started the Big Data Challenge in 2006 when they formed a partnership with Teradata Corporation and began building their first data warehouse and changing their processes and IT infrastructure to create and make a more responsive, scalable and accurate information system. They opted for cloud technology to pursue a marketing campaign involving the Twilight film series and their customers. The use of Volvo cars in films has led to a huge increase in internet traffic, causing slowdowns and outages on their networks. To avoid future outages and launch a video game competition, Volvo turned to the cloud. “In order to meet its needs for a cost-effective infrastructure that could scale quickly to handle high traffic volume and which would also serve a global audience with high performance, Volvo chose to implement a solution based on the cloud. .” 1More recently, Volvo partnered with Ericsson to create a cloud-based service beneficial to the consumer, business and other community partners. “Drivers and passengers will be able to access information, navigation and entertainment applications from a screen in the car. At the same time, Volvo Cars will be able to open parts of the platform to other players in the automotive industry ecosystem. 2In both cases, Volvo recognized the incredible flexibility and affordability of using the cloud to interact and serve its customers in unique ways that were not possible with its previous IT infrastructure. Volvo's mission is to become the leader in customer service in the automotive industry.
