“On a Hymn Song by Philip Bliss” was composed by David Holsinger, a famous conductor and composer from Hardin, Missouri. Holsinger originally received his Bachelor of Music degree in 1967 and his Master of Music degree in 1974. He received numerous awards and held several prestigious positions at public and higher education institutions throughout the county. He currently serves as director of the Lee University Wind Ensemble in Cleveland, Tennessee. This composition represents a departure from the frenetic, exuberant rhythms that are typically associated with much of Holsigner's work. This is a restful, thoughtful and gentle composition, based on the hymn originally written by Horatio Spafford and music by Philip Bliss. The composition was written by Holsinger to honor the outgoing principal of Shady Grove Christian Academy. On a Hymnsong of Philip Bliss was given as a gift by the Shady Grove Christian Academy Concert Band to Rev. Steve Edel in May 1989.
