This is an alarming rate, given that many cases go unreported. Abuse can have devastating lifelong effects. Victims of child abuse often present with numerous problems such as depression, suicidal thoughts, or alcohol and drug abuse. Abused children are more likely to repeat the vicious cycle with their own children and more likely to become involved in unhealthy relationships (Child Welfare Information Gateway, 2012). Child abuse does not discriminate. This happens across all socioeconomic levels, races, and cultures. Because laws differ from state to state, it is not always clear what constitutes child abuse. It is important to know what child abuse is and what the warning signs are. While various signs of abuse are obvious, others are not as obvious. Child abuse is a problem around the world and its effects can last a lifetime (World Health Organization, 2016). Therefore, the research problem is child abuse and its consequences.
