Essay / Symbolic Implications in Lottery by Shirley Jackson
In most cases, characters and objects are symbols of a story that send messages to the reader to better understand what the story is about. Symbolism gives clues that explain why that character or object is used, for example stop signs and other road signs all have different shapes, sizes and colors to represent and explain what that sign means. In most cases, many businesses or restaurants use symbols and signs to let their peers know what they are trying to sell or do. The symbols can be used for different occasions to know what the mood or tone refers to. In the history of the lottery, a tradition has been passed down from generation to generation. Over the years, the tradition slowly changed, as it became colder and harsher. A sacrifice of one of the village members had to be made so that their crops could grow according to their own beliefs. As the start of summer approached, "Mr. Summers" held a lottery to draw lots to see who would be the next person to face death and their own life for the people's crops. All the townspeople gathered at a certain place to see the drawing and stone the chosen one to death. A well-known member “Mr. Warner” has been part of this tradition for seventy-seven years and has seen how the lottery has changed. Beliefs of “lottery in June, corn will soon be heavy” developed among the villagers and the sacrifice of one of their inhabitants was the key to this success. The new members of the village were now experiencing what their parents or elders had to experience. The boy Watson was entering his first lottery and was going to draw for his mother and himself. Knowing that he was drawing for both of them this year shows that he may have lost his father last year middle of paper...... the tradition that was passed down was not as good as 'she was. And as new generations begin to arrive, things will only get worse for the rich summer harvest. In Shirley Jackson, the lottery, characters and objects gave clues as to what was happening and what would ultimately lead to the end of the lottery. history.
