Child sexual abuse is a social crisis of considerable magnitude (Lipovsky and Hanson, 2007). This type of maltreatment has been shown to be correlated with the development of a wide range of mental health and social problems in children and adults (Kemp, Signal, Botros, Taylor, & Prentice, 2014). Child sexual abuse is the term used when an adult uses a child or adolescent for their own sexual gratification or pleasure (Ratican, 1992). Additionally, a common expression of childhood sexual abuse is control over the abused child (Lipovsky & Hanson, 2007). This type of abuse has no particular demographics and occurs across all social, cultural, economic, and religious strata (England and Thompson, 1988). Additionally, this type of abuse does not always involve penetration, but also includes inappropriate touching or witnessing sexual acts. Adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse experience a range of short- and long-term effects resulting from the exploitation. Additionally, survivors suffer from very low self-esteem and often take responsibility for the abuse. Finally, the effects of childhood sexual abuse include sleep disturbances, codependency, and may continue to be abused by others even after leaving an abusive environment (Lipovsky & Hanson, 2007). The encounter with child sexual abuse differs depending on the individual. The severity, occurrence and age of the child, the relationship between the child and the abuser, the level of support, the abuser's confession, active family life and the exact nature of the abuse.
