  • Essay / Don't limit yourself - 699

Due to the boundaries within the natural sciences and art, knowledge production can be said to be limited when methods are limited. This “knowledge production” is acquired through experience, practice and personal involvement. I recognize that ethical judgments limit the methods available for knowledge production in the arts and natural sciences. Ethical judgments are made by the observing public/society, but ultimately it is up to the artist/scientist to decide whether or not they will let these judgments distract them from their work. With artists like arina ro i and scientific research experiments like the Tuskegee syphilis experiment or stem cell and genetics research, one can assess the limits of knowledge production due to ethical limits. “Art” is a very ambiguous term that everyone is capable of creating their own personal definition of, but the most commonly used definition is “the expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, usually under a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works that are to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power.” Art as a subject uses ways of knowing, emotion and language to produce knowledge. The knowledge produced in art is the message that the artist tries to convey to his audience through his work. The lack of a solid definition gives artists freedom of choice when expressing their emotions through art. Although many artists create works to express their own emotions, many artists also create works to raise awareness about a certain topic. Whether or not the methods they use to convey this awareness are morally correct is a big question today. Another question to consider is whether or not ... middle of paper ...... does not exist. In Ilan, Italy, in Cattalan, he hung lifelike child mannequins in trees to protest violence against children.2 Although the work continued to spark public outcry, its message was understood . Although I agree that ethical judgments limit the methods available in the production of artistic knowledge, there are great artists who ignore the opinion of the majority and stick only to their own thoughts and desires when creating a work of art. Because art involves emotions, it can be said that works of art are intended to represent the artists' own opinions and are not intended for anything else. Although the works are based on the artists' views, they strive to send a message and raise awareness to their audience and it is important to consider the consequences of one's work. “The frontiers of medicine exist in research.”
