Many different factors caused people, primarily Northern abolitionists, to fight for the abolition of slavery. For some, slavery was wrong from its birth; others wanted to end slavery for political reasons, but many more Northern whites realized that slavery was physically inhumane, psychologically abusive, and politically insensitive. Uncle Tom's Cabin, published March 20, 1852, shed much-needed light on slavery in the South. In this book, Harriet Beecher Stowe exposed the sickening evils of slavery. Many Northerners were unaware of the brutal treatment and severe cruelties suffered by slaves and wanted to help after reading the book. Stowe depicts the physical and psychological abuse inflicted on slaves. (Unger 89). Slaves had no legal rights. (Unger 89). A slave owner could easily avoid the repercussions of murder, excessive beating, beating, and torture of a slave. The mere thought of the mistreatment of slaves made some Northerners cringe.
