On April 20, 2010, BP's deep water horizon drill exploded in the Gulf of Mexico and this oil spill killed 11 innocent workers and caused serious damage to the environment. “It was the worst environmental disaster in U.S. history and BP lost its reputation around the world.” The oil spill received negative attention from the media and the public. BP's "Restoring the Gulf of Mexico" website uses these three strategies to try to repair its reputation: photos of its new employees to show its commitment to creating more jobs and ensuring safety at the company, images of emergency services and clean-up programs to show its rapid responses and efforts to prevent further damage, and clear language about its legal proceedings and investigations to show its commitment to affected people and the environment. On the “Return to Work in the Gulf of Mexico” page, BP provides a photo of its three drilling workers working on a drilling floor in the Gulf of Mexico. In the photo we can see workers focusing on the construction of its new deepwater oil and gas development. BP says the company has created more than 2,300 jobs in the Gulf of Mexico and supported ten thousand additional jobs in the region. In another photo, we can see an employee training with a Hi-tech simulator with the help of an instructor. The image conveys the message that the company strives to provide training to its employees and implements new surrounding technologies in order to prevent future harm. BP used these photos to show the public that it is working to ensure safety in the future by employing additional staff. From claims information, BP shows that it paid out approximately $11 billion to individuals and businesses that survived the disaster. BP lost its agreement with the EPA in 2010 after the oil spill, but retained the agreement in 2014 by resolving all exclusion and suspension issues.
