  • Essay / Corporal punishment in public schools - 655

Corporal punishment is defined as “punishment inflicted on the body”. My main reason for not approving corporal punishment would be that corporal punishment creates a negative reaction from the student's perspective and ultimately additional problems. Disciplining students in ways that harm them and prevent them from misbehaving is not the right way to go. I argue that corporal punishment in public schools should not be allowed because it is barbaric, harmful and in no way a method of solving personal problems. First, corporal punishment in public schools is barbaric because it can cause a lot of stress in a child which is usually due to bullying or child abuse. Brain scans reveal a structural and biochemical change that affects a child's social behavior. For example, in an article written by Shen-Li Lee, he states that "a child's anterior cingulate gyrus (ACG) suffers from cell loss, which affects the child's ability to moderate and emphasize his fear.” Additionally, the pathway to their brain is altered in ways that can affect their ability to handle stress, which can lead the child to become impulsive and aggressive toward others. Additionally, it “can cause brain impairments, which can lead to disorders such as ADHD, depression, attention deficit disorder, etc. ". Secondly, corporal punishment in schools should not be allowed as it can have harmful effects in a school environment. the health of the student. Because according to Science Daily, "a child in a school that used corporal punishment performed worst on tasks involving executive functioning, such as, for example: planning, abstract thinking, and delay of gratification." » Additionally, according to Social Development, "a harshly punitive environment...... middle of paper ...... training programs, expulsion, Saturday school, restitution and detention."
