  • Essay / The Matrix: Dreams and Senses - 650

In a dream, humans can have any sort of sensory experience, but visual experiences are the most common. They rely on the dreamer's memory and imagination. The film “The Matrix” advanced the idea that one could live a lifetime as a vegetable fed an illusory life via brain stimulation. The plot not only raises questions about the relationship between mind and body and the uncertainty of knowledge, but also more modern concerns about political power in a cyber-infected world. Carolyn Korsmeyer examines the issue of sensory experience and how film portrays classic issues. of perception in his essay “See, believe, touch, truth”. She connects her assessment of the film's use of the senses to problems that philosophers have faced over the years when trying to determine the role that the senses play in our belief systems. The philosopher Descartes, after the emphasis shifted from “what is real” to “even if I think I know what is real, how can I know it?” realized that all his previous works were based on his own and others' senses and therefore had no basis other than his belief in it. He knew that under certain conditions, such as distance and poor lighting, his senses could be misled, but that these conditions could be compensated for. He realized that his senses could be misled when he dreamed and, like in the film, he challenges everyone to discover ways to tell the difference between the two. We have all had the experience of going through a period in our life, such as waking up and going to school to take an important exam, only to find out it was a dream and we are actually still at home in our beds and that day, we already experienced in our minds, is in reality only just beginning. How do we know what is happening middle of paper ......st about past experiences. In our past, the feeling of trust was established by the levels of pleasure received during the process of touching. A person whose past includes a higher than average amount of violence might perceive the film's scenes in an unreliable way. They might be more inclined to be like Cypher, willing to forgo real-world experiences for a world in which he feels safe. But whatever direction our personal experiences push us, it is this feeling of trust in a belief, even if that belief is only a sensual perception, that allows us to go on a journey and experiment with ideas. .
