Essay / Tonyukuk vs. Bilga Kagan - 961
The Second Turkish Empire has many important figures, but two that stand out above the rest are Tonyukuk and Bilga Kagan. These two figures left behind what is today called Orkhon-Turkish writing which details the history of the Second Turkish Empire. However, there is a big difference between the inscriptions written by Bilga Kagan and those written by Tonyukuk. Bilga Kagan's inscriptions not only detail her own important role in the history of the Turkish Empire, but also detail the great achievements of other members of the royal family, creating an illustration that generally glorifies the achievements of the royal family. Tonyukuk's inscription mainly deals with self-aggrandizement to the point that he states that he is virtually responsible for every military victory and he even claims to be responsible for the enthronement of Ilteris as the first kagan of the Second Turkish Empire. Tonyukuk is therefore more interested in securing his own grandiose legacy as a key founder of the Second Turkish Empire. It goes even further when Tonyukuk makes the following statement: "If Ilteris Kagan had not won, or if he had never existed, and if I, Bilga Tonyukuk, had not won, or if I had never existed, in the land of Qapyan Kagan and/or the Turkish people Sir, there would have been no tribes, no peoples, no human beings at all. » (Tonyukuk Inscription, North N1-N3) It is therefore obvious that the Bilga Kagan and Tonyukuk inscriptions contrast with each other. Therefore, this essay will discuss why Tonyukuk decided to glory primarily in his inscriptions and the possible reaction Bilga Kagan might have to Tonyukuk's statement. As previously stated, the Tonyukuk inscription essentially worships Tonyukuk at the expense...... middle of paper ...... and their stories also contrast greatly. Tonyukuk, who had been removed from office for supporting the wrong member of the royal family for the kagan, was most likely embittered by his treatment. He therefore wrote his inscription to revere his “great” role in the creation and expansion of the Second Turkish Empire. Conversely, Bilga Kagan's inscriptions revere herself and the royal family, often giving credit for great achievements to the royal family rather than Tonyukuk. Furthermore, Tonyukuk is not even mentioned in Bilga Kagan's inscriptions. It is therefore clear that these two inscriptions contrast greatly since these two rulers had different objectives in writing their inscriptions. For this reason, if Bilga Kagan had the chance to read the Tonyukuk inscriptions, he probably would have been unhappy because the royal family is being sidelined so that Tonyukuk can glory..
