Introduction: The first part of this report will examine the different parts of the nervous system. Part two will look at different types of neurons and the functions of these neurons. Third, the nerve reflex pathway will be described and illustrated. Finally, the process of nerve impulses and their transmission will be explained. Nervous system: The nervous system helps the body coordinate involuntary and voluntary actions. The system also helps transmit signals between parts of the body. For example, if a person were to pick up an object, the brain would send signals to the nerves to enable the grip and force needed to pick up the object. This action includes many other aspects which will be discussed later in this report. The nervous system also has a complex network of specialized cells that have specific functions. Cells in the nervous system communicate through electrochemical waves. There are two main divisions in the nervous system: the central nervous system (CNS) and the peripheral nervous system (PNS). While the CNS involves the brain where information is received and processes sensory information. The CNS initiates responses, stores memories, generates thoughts and emotions. The CNS also involves the spinal cord, which transmits signals to and from the brain and also controls reflex activations. For example, if a hand is placed on something hot, the CNS ensures that the hand is moved away from danger to limit damage. This reflex occurs without any thought on the part of the person. While the main function of the PNS is to connect the limbs and organs to the CNS. The PNS is divided into two divisions, somatic and autonomic. The somatic system controls voluntary muscle movements, such as flexion of the arm. While the autonomic system...... middle of paper ......f the autonomic nervous system, which included the sympathetic and parasympathetic system. The next part of the report examines the three main types of nerve cells: unipolar, multipolar, and bipolar. A part of the neuron known as the myelin sheath was discussed and how it affects a person if the myelin sheath is damaged. The report examines a specific disease known as multiple sclerosis and the effects of this disease on people who suffer from it. The next part studied the reflex pathway and its essential role in protecting the body. The pathway was described using the reflex technique and the pathway it takes with the neurons involved in this pathway. The final part of the report looked at the synapse and how it transmits signals to other neurons. During this conference neurotransmitters were discussed as well as how local anesthetic blocks pain during tooth extraction..
