    My name is Tom Robinson. I lived on the outskirts of Maycomb Country with my wife, Helen, and children. I worked on Mr. Link Deas' farm as a laborer. He hired me even though I'm black and have a crippled arm; he is a very nice man. Every day on my way to work, I passed the Ewell house. It was a white family that lived near the dump. Sometimes I would stop by and help their oldest daughter, Mayella, with some yard work. None of his younger brothers or sisters seemed to help him, so I loved helping him. I just thought it was the right thing to do, and besides, I felt sorry for her. One day Mayella says she has something to do for me inside the house. But none of the kids were there and I was a little worried. When Mayella closed the door behind me and started kissing me, I knew I was in trouble. I started to push her away when her dad, Bob, saw us through the window. I knew I was in trouble at that point, even though none of this was my fault, I was still black and it would be my fault if anyone caught me. When he opened the door, I started running. I don't know if Mayella was beaten by her father, but all I knew was that I had to run. I ran home, as fast as the light. I told Helen everything and she said everything would be fine. But Mr. Ewell had already called Mr. Heck Tate, the sheriff, and told him that I had raped and beaten Mayella. I knew I could be killed for this charge and I was really nervous.
