The Importance of Music in the Death of a Salesman by Arthur MillerHuman emotions are something we find rarely a way to express clearly: from simple hand gestures to a disgusted face. . To better understand his novel, Arthur Miller uses the most comprehensible method of understanding, music, to express the emotions of the characters in his play “Death of a Salesman”. The characters, Willy, Linda, Biff, Happy, and Ben, have a certain style of music and instruments that represent them to show the reader what type of emotional person they are. The beginning of the piece begins with a soft, gentle flute mix. which announces Willy's gradual return from Yonkers. This slow confusion ends abruptly when Willy comes home and tells Yonkers of his problems. This sentimental sound is heard once again during Ben's first visit to Willy's house. The story of his father and his flute-making business sets a warm tone, but it is destroyed by Ben's action in throwing Biff, a curious young boy, helplessly to the ground. The final rendition of this song is heard at Willy's sad funeral, where Linda pays tribute to her beloved husband. Ending on a sad note, the flute appears in a moment of strange emotions. At the beginning of the play, a state of confusion...... middle of paper ...... illy's funeral. Initially a bit happy, the melody moves from a major key to a minor key, thus going from a happy sound to one of sadness and despair, but a good sound for a well-deserved tribute. Willy was a misguided salesman. He wanted the best for his boys. Joyful songs always accompanied these moments. But when his desire for the best turned into the worst, an unpleasant song sustained him. While Willy was confused, a mixture of the two was heard. Human emotions are something we all take for granted because they are not properly understood. Music is just one of many ways to make these emotions understandable..
