When someone mentions “witch hunts”, we tend to think of the witchcraft trials which took place in the 14th-16th centuries in Europe or even the trials of the Salem Witches that took place during the era. beginnings of America. Fueled by mass hysteria and fear, the results of these trials ended in burnings or lynchings of people suspected of being associated with witchcraft. At the heart of these trials we find the influence of society (i.e. widespread fear) and politics which, in this case, involved the courts. Witch hunts lasted so long because they were effective in limiting social deviance that any variation from the norm would cause you to stigmatize the practice of witchcraft. Since the witch hunt ended with the deaths of so many (mostly innocent) individuals, the idea of conducting a witch hunt has acquired a negative social connotation. As much as we would like to believe that the days of being consumed by irrationality such as witch hunts are over, the hunt for communists in the 1950s proves this belief false. In the same way that the idea of McCarthyism was accepted, modern witch hunts have taken the guise of maintaining stability and social order. Responsibility for control is placed on individuals in positions of political and religious power, as they are the ones who can manipulate government laws and influence social opinions in favor of a social normalcy that influences gender ideology. Understand how laws and social opinions can be changed. by those in power to reflect the ideals of the majority, one must first know the link between political and religious ideology. In short, religion and politics are the factors on which gender ideology is shaped to fit society. That being said, to combat threats to social and moral codes, religion increases the intensity of its forces (i.e. political and religious powers). An increase in power usually results in an attempt to eliminate threats. This is done using political influence and religious policies applied by government officials and religious leaders. It is important to note here that individuals who rise to power bring with them their own beliefs and moral values; these individual systems may or may not fall within the realm of societal norms. However, this is where we find the most use of power to defend their belief system.
