The population of this ground-nesting bird population has declined from 16 million during the 1900s to nearly 350,000 in 2010. This represents a loss of nearly 98%. of all sage grouse. In 2004, the sage grouse was denied protection under the ESA. However, on September 22, 2015, the sage grouse was deemed to warrant protection needs and was placed on the federal endangered species list. Amphibians and reptiles in the southwestern United States pose major survival problems, particularly the Arizona toad species found in Utah. These toads, along with many other reptiles and amphibians, are experiencing excessive habitat loss as well as other threats to their survival.
