Essay / The Horrors of Animal Testing - 954
The number of animals burned, maimed, poisoned and abused rises to over 100 million each year (11 facts). The lives of these animals are just as important as human lives and the lack of respect for these intelligent creatures is astonishing. The reality is that many people are unaware of the horrors of animal testing, the laws against this horrible act, and most importantly, the effective alternatives. It's hard to imagine what scientists do to animals when they're in a laboratory. To bring a single pesticide to market, more than 50 experiments on approximately 12,000 animals are required (11 facts). Even after testing all of these animals, 92% of the items in question that appear safe turn out to be failures in human clinical trials (11 Facts). With this statistic, why are they still testing on animals? Yet scientists still conduct studies that require force-feeding subjects for weeks or months, or skin and eye irritation tests where they rub chemicals into shaved skin or drip the product chemical in the eyes, while neglecting to use painkillers (11 facts). Scientists also force animals to swallow large doses of a chemical to test which dose will cause death (11 facts). Sometimes a test will involve killing pregnant animals and testing their fetuses (11 facts). Among other things, animals can develop neurotic behaviors due to sterility, stress and boredom. This includes spinning in circles, rocking back and forth, pulling out hair, and biting skin (Peta). At the end of the study, the animals are cruelly euthanized, and they do not have the chance to live a happy life (American). Scientists have placed all their trust in ambiguous animal “models” that do not necessarily correspond…. middle of paper ...... or register for their use; pet owners, agricultural use, and retail pet stores are not under the control of federal law (Explanation). Also under the AWA there are regulations on how animals can enter the trade chain in order to eliminate the use of stolen animals (Explanation). Research institutions must comply with legal restrictions regarding the imposition of pain during experiments; they must establish an animal care committee to review the facility's use of animals and inspect animal housing (Explanation). There is so much that can be done to raise awareness about the horrors of animal testing, about the laws against this horrible act. , and effective alternatives. It's time for America to start a revolution and do something to change its ways. India, China, Italy and Europe have ended or are working to end animal testing. Why is America so far behind (Peta)?
