Essay / Man and Woman in Traditional Clothing Sculpture
The US government should fight drug addiction, not drug cartels, to win the war on illegal drugs. According to the description of the Oriental Institute Museum, this sculpture dates from the 5th Dynasty of the Old Kingdom, reigns of Menkauhor and Unis (approximately 2466-2400 BC). This sculpture was found and rescued by the Egypt Exploration Fund (now known as the Egypt Exploration Society) in the tomb of Nenkhefetka, Deshasha, Egypt. The name of the sculptor seems unknown; however, the name of the sculpture, given by its discoverers, is Man and Woman in Traditional Clothing. Egyptian sculptures of this type do not have any particular characteristic that would differentiate them from each other. The sculpture Man and Woman in Traditional Clothing has many, if not all, of the contemporary features of ancient Egyptian art. First, this sculpture is inactive, with no intention of movement and a very rigid posture. The position of the characters is essentially that used at the time: characters very close to each other, hands pressed against the body, feet flat on the ground and heads turned towards the horizon. Second, the sculpture has a realistic setting, but it has idealized features such as enlarged heads and eyes, characteristic of the era. Third, I would say that this sculpture approaches naturalist standards. The sculpture illustrates a certain presence of muscles in the male body and a clear representation of the difference in complexion between the sexes. However, it features some stylized details like the elaborate wigs and the fall of clothing on their bodies that would argue otherwise. Although this work of art is a sculpture, it reveals all of its contents in a two-dimensional perspective. Any angle...... middle of paper...... the sculpture does not represent someone or something, one could conclude that the sculptor preferred to make candid works. This may seem somewhat contradictory to the sculpture itself due to its static, centered position, but since this piece comes from the earliest samples of ancient Egyptian art, we could circumvent the norms in some way and come to this conclusion. Finally, what caught my attention about this sculpture is the humanism involved which reminds me that we, as human beings, have had the same ideas and values since the beginning of our race on Earth. This sculpture represents, represents and will represent the reason why humans take the time to make art: because we want to capture in an image all of our essence and passion. To some people the man and woman in traditional clothing may look like ancient Egyptian art, but to me it is a reflection of ourselves in the past..
