    According to a 2008 mental health study by the Associated Press and mtvU, eight in 10 college students say they have been occasionally or frequently stressed in the past three months. This is a twenty percent increase from a survey conducted in 2003 (Wu). Students, especially freshmen, are not used to the pressures that college brings. Students have to work three times as hard to maintain good grades in college. Many students also have to deal with the financial anxiety that college brings. Every year, tuition fees are increased; Yet parents aren't making more money to offset the increases. Additionally, the tension of being away from home for the first time causes students to feel depressed, worried, sad, or overwhelmed. All of this can leave students unable to function. In a recent National College Health Survey, ten percent of students were diagnosed with depression (University of Chicago). Stress is a serious problem that many students are unaware of, but something needs to be done. Trine University offers some opportunities for stress relief, but these are not enough. There are many options that can be implemented at Trine, but massage, a puppy/kitten room, more family days, and procrastination prevention groups are the options that will have the most impact in solving this famous problem. There are many symptoms of stress, particularly muscular ones. tension, high blood pressure, fatigue, difficulty concentrating and forgetfulness. These can weaken the immune system, which in turn leads to viruses attacking the system more easily (“UF Tip”). All students should be able to stay healthy so as not to miss important classes. Additionally, parents will be amazed at the low statistics Trine reportedly has regarding stress-free students.
