Essay / Commercial Surrogacy Essay - 1036
Commercial surrogacy commodifies children because by paying the surrogate mother to give up her child, she treats the child as an object of exchange or a commodity which can be bought and sold. As in any commercial transaction, parents give money for the exchange of an object, the child. The parents get the child they want and the mother gets the money, but what about how the child feels about this event? The parents and the surrogate mother acted in their own interests. You could say they wanted the best for the child. However, the first priority in the intentional procreation of the child was not the well-being of the child but rather its transfer to the parents in exchange for money. Furthermore, women's labor is commodified because the surrogate mother treats her parental rights as if they were a property right and not a trust. In other words, decisions made regarding the child are not made primarily for their benefit. There is a monetary cost to the mother forfeiting her parental rights. She has her parental rights, which must be managed for the well-being of the owner, as if it were a property right, which must be managed for personal purposes.
