  • Essay / Year-Round School - 1052

At first, the idea of a year-round school would have been considered completely insane, as farm families depended on their children to stay home during the harvest period. Today, in modern times, the term year-round school is becoming more and more common in the United States of America. Little by little, schools are changing the way they teach, moving from a long break of three months to a shorter break of one month during the summer. Moving American high schools to a year-round schedule benefits both schools and students because they still get recess throughout the school year, children are less likely to forget information, children would have more time with teachers to learn, and parents would not have to pay for childcare during the long summer vacation. One of the first concerns a student has when thinking about year-round school is that they will be in school five days a week, 52 weeks a year. This thinking is incorrect. The year-round school schedule is always based on 180 days, the same number as the traditional school year. The big difference between the two systems is that the school year has breaks more spread out throughout the year. Instead of a three-month long summer vacation, year-round schools provide a one-month summer vacation. Although summer vacations are shorter, the system allows the school to have longer vacations during the school year. An example of a year-round school schedule is Balanced Calendar; children would attend school for nine weeks, then have a 15-day break. These two-week breaks that occur periodically throughout the year allow children to relax and not think about household chores... middle of paper ...... knowledge, and our country will no longer be one that manufactures technology and medical advances. School systems need a change, and that change is a move from traditional schooling to year-round schooling. Works Cited “Balanced calendar compared to the traditional calendar”.
