  • Essay / The Maze Runner by James Dashner - 841

At the beginning, the main character, Thomas, has his memory erased so he knows nothing. Over time however, he begins to accept where he is (the Glade) and that the people of the Glade only have each other. Thomas also adapts to Glade slang and speaks like a Glader. He also saves the lives of some Gladers who are his friends, like Alby. In the end, Thomas became a leader of sorts, trying to make the best decisions while the rest of the Gladers didn't know what to do. Thomas speaks to the other Gladers like someone would speak to their friends or family, and Thomas does his best to help protect the Gladers. Thomas is harsh and cold towards the people of WICKED, because in the end one of their workers kills Chuck, one of Thomas' best friends at the Glade. He also has a crush on a girl named Teresa, and she and Thomas work together during the book. The main idea of the story is that the Gladers must escape the maze. At the beginning, you see all the Gladers doing different tasks to help each other survive. One of the jobs is that of a runner. Runners enter the maze and map it, trying to find a way out of the maze. They leave at sunrise and return during meals. Thomas wants to become a runner, and eventually he does, after saving Alby and showing Newt, Alby and Minho that he has the skills to become a runner. Thomas learns the ropes of being a runner and traces sections of the maze. Eventually, he and Teresa discover the code to the maze and, with the help of other Gladers, they put the code together. When the Gladers discover the code, they attempt to escape and ultimately do so, with some Gladers dying. The story and plot are fast-paced, which I like, and the author has more action going on as the plot progresses... middle of paper...... the articles were not in chronological order, it would probably be very confusing for the reader. I think the author chooses to order the events this way because he wants to maintain the kind of mystery he maintains in the book, with the Gladers trying to figure out how to get out of the maze and I think if the events were in a different order, it would spoil the story. The Gladers have a strange slang that only they use. Klunk – a word used as an insult; comes from the sound the poop makesShuck face - a word used as an insult, such as calling someone an idiotGreenie/Greenbean - a word Gladers call the GladeShank newbie - an insult that is commonly usedI think the author has invented this slang because he didn't want to use bad words and he wanted to show how the Gladers had developed their own way of life, their own civilization, including their own language..
