Obtaining the Power of Others in the OdysseyThroughout the Odyssey, Odysseus' power was acquired through power from others, which gave rise to three phases of understanding: self-determination, courage, and having a greater vision of life. To understand these three phases, one must be able to conquer the predominance of those that are less useful than others. Even though Odysseus was physically strong, he was not what he was mentally, without the help and guidance of the gods. Odysseus was like someone who has no friends, but when he meets more people, he becomes popular. The one who was alone and meets new people, has more friends and discovers more interesting topics about everyday life. They are the ones who have more predominance than the others because they know more people and have much more interesting topics. Odysseus was like this because he didn't know much without the help and advice of others. Once Odysseus had served enough time in a place against his will, he would be determined to leave that place. Odysseus's journey home could now be completed. For seven years, Calypso held him prisoner on the island of Ogygia and he was determined to leave and continue his journey. Calypso agrees to let him go and she gives Odysseus some advice and counsel, saying: "Only I will not help you on your way, for I have no ships equipped with oars, nor crew to carry you on the vast territory. ocean ridges, but I will freely give [you] advice and I will not hide from you how [you] can return unscathed to [your] own native land" (47). Calypso recognizes the greatness of Odysseus.
