  • Essay / Humanistic Psychology - 1180

In general, human nature consists of three main parts: the mind (intellect), the body (biological constitution) and the spirit (emotional constitution). While the mind and body are widely explored in behaviorism and psychoanalysis, a person's mind became increasingly popular beginning in the mid-20th century. In the early 1960s, a movement called third force psychology emerged in reaction to the failure of behaviorism and psychoanalysis to fully take into account the human condition (Hergenhahn, 2008). This third force movement is humanistic psychology, which refers to the combination of the philosophy of romanticism and existentialism. Humanistic psychology instead paid more attention to the potentials of each individual and emphasized the importance of self-realization. Furthermore, humanists believe that the uniqueness of human beings and their positive position should be more focused in future studies. According to Hergenhahn (2008), the other two forces of psychology have neglected a number of important human attributions. The main reason was that behaviorism focused only on human behavior rather than anything unique about humans, and psychoanalysis focused primarily on human disorders and the treatment of those disorders. However, something positive and the human spirit also needed to be emphasized, which is why humanistic psychology was developed. I am not surprised that humanistic psychology is becoming a new field of psychology because a human being is different from other animals or objects. Humans have their own minds and abilities to create many things that did not exist before, such as electricity and computers. I think this is the uniqueness of humanity and should become a subject to study in depth. Humanistic...... middle of paper ...... self-realization in life. Human beings are different from other objects, such as animals, because they pursue spiritual life and realize their potential. Additionally, freedom and unconditional positive regard are also emphasized in humanistic psychology. From my point of view, people should focus more on the mind than other things because it is the uniqueness of human being and we should make good use of it. Spiritual life should also be emphasized in our life. Nowadays, more and more people tend to devote more money and energy to material life than to spiritual life. Although they are rich in the natural world, they are poor in the inner world. Therefore, I think humanism should be emphasized in the 21st century. Works Cited Hergenhahn, BR (2008).
