Essay / Theme of Greed in the Crucible - 1040
For example, Ann Putnam wants healthy children and envies Rebecca Nurse for all the healthy children she has borne. She accuses Nurse of having killed most of her children by witchcraft. In fact, the official arrest warrant for Rebecca Nurse is issued "[for] the marvelous and supernatural murder of Goody Putnam's babies" (67). Ann Putnam doesn't care if one of Salem's most pious families is torn apart as long as its members suffer for their happiness. Additionally, Thomas Putnam's desire for more land leads him to have his daughter accused of witchcraft by an innocent person since "[t]he day [she] yelled at Jacobs, [Putnam] said she had given him a beautiful gift of land. ยป(89). His greed for land outweighs his concern for the other residents of the city. Both Ann and Thomas Putnam are willing to destroy other families for their own benefit, and they succeed because the townspeople's fear of witchcraft clouds their common sense that the accusers might have ulterior motives.
