In this article there will be an examination of fundamental biblical principles through the exploration of Motivational Interviewing (MI) and the 12 STEPS of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) to treat people struggling with addictive behaviors and dependence. The importance of fostering healthy relationships, maintaining a strong sense of self-awareness, developing the ability to know one's existing problems, and the value of depending on God are also discussed in detail and supported by Scripture. The author will integrate a biblical worldview and examine the implications of incorporating a 12-STEP program and MI into counseling as well as how best to use them with non-Christians and Christians. This article concludes with the author's personal reflections, considerations and revelations from the research carried out for this article. Knowledge of addiction counseling has increased exponentially. Studying Bible words and the 12 STEPS program have given me a detailed introduction to this ongoing, multi-dimensional and confusing process of addiction counseling. 'In many ways I was completely ignorant and thought like that. many others think addiction is a choice and why can't people just stop. After this article, I have a new appreciation for the helping profession and for those who struggle with sobriety. My ultimate goal is to allow God to shape me for His use and purpose in reaching and introducing souls to my Savior; allowing him to make their lives whole through me.
