Essay / Three three characters in “Crime and Punishment”
Each of these girls sells her life for her family. Sonya works as a prostitute so her family can make ends meet. Lizaveta is the slave of her older sister, Alyona Ivanova. She can never act without Alyona's approval and suffers beatings for incompetence. Sonya plans to marry a man to ensure a comfortable life for her mother and her brother, Roskolnikov. These women give up everything for their family and, as a result, their value in society diminishes. Dunya is different from the others in that she has someone who opposes her decision to give up her life. Although these women's situation appears to be related to what a woman owes to her family, it actually shows the family's complacency towards the value of women.
