  • Essay / The Women of “For Colored Girls” - 1191

“For Colored Girls” is made up of seven women who represented a different shade of the rainbow. The colors are brown, red, yellow, white, green, orange and blue. Their costumes and makeup transformed each of them and symbolized the color their character embodied. All the actors gave all their roles equal importance, without one dominating the other. These women formed a bond together through their various adversities, gradually moving them from strangers to acquaintances. From an objective point of view, the audience is allowed to simply observe events as they unfold (Goodykoontz & Jacobs, 2011, p. 82) chronologically. Throughout the film, during certain conflicting and traumatic scenes, one of the women recites a poem to signify and release the emotion felt at that moment. Tyler Perry's film "For Colored Girls" was inspired by a play For Colored Girls Considered Suicide When the Rainbow is Enuf, written by Ntozake Shange. The story was adapted from a play composed of monologues and choreography, which combines dance and poetry in such a way that each complements the other in a very dramatic way. The term first appeared in this piece in hopes of creating a new art form different from traditional poetry. Shange developed the form, which does not contain traditional plot and character elements; rather, it focuses on creating an emotional response within the audience (Nathan, 2001). “The decision to bring this play to the cinema caused a lot of controversy because of the difference between cinema and theater. Although many would agree that Perry's film adaptation captured the essence and purpose of the play with its drama, mystery, humor, tragedy and compassion, many still preferred...... middle of paper......those who are aware of it from someone who has experienced these traumas. These tragedies and many other trials that women endure are what unites us; not where we live or what we own. Our differences should allow us to lean on and depend on each other when life is too much to bear. /www.dallasobserver.com/2010-11-04/film/for-colored-girls-tyler-perry-mangles-ntozake-shange-s-classic/Goodykoontz, B. and Jacobs, C.P.
