Does anyone care about Sunday Night Football? It's not just any Sunday night NFL game, but the biggest sporting event in the world that 151 million people will watch in 232 different countries. (“In numbers”). Welcome to the Super Bowl. The big night that everyone is looking forward to is a “trillion-dollar economic engine, greater than the gross domestic product of many nations” (John 3). Although the Super Bowl only occurs once a year, it is the largest and most famous game in American history and the most watched television spectacle in the world. It all started in 1920 with the American Professional Football Association, made up of fourteen leagues. . The league split into two competing rivals, the National Football League and the American Football League. The NFL took over the sport until the 1960s, when a new, more dominant and competitive AFL formed. Because of this new spark, many fans have converted to supporting and cheering for AFL ("NFL Super Bowl") teams. Tension grew between the two leagues and there were many disagreements over who really was the best team in the country. Because Americans are born with a competitive spirit, the champions of the AFL and NFL decided to face each other in a championship game, the Super Bowl. The first Super Bowl took place on January 15, 1967 at the Los Angeles Coliseum. The Green Bay Packers faced the Kansas City Chiefs in front of nearly 62,000 spectators (Anderson 69). The Packers earned a victory for the NFL on the first-ever Super Bowl Sunday. Three years later, when each league had two Super Bowl victories to its credit, the NFL and the AFL decided to unite to form a league composed of two conferences, the NFC and the AFC (Anderson 75).
