Essay / Lord of the Flies - 1024
William Golding was born in Cornwall in 1911 and attended grammar school in Oxford before becoming a writer. He has worked as a lecturer, scientist, musician and as a teacher. In 1940 he joined the Royal Navy and took part in the D-Day invasion of France. After the war he decided to write again and he wrote Lord of the Flies in 1954, at the start of the Cold War. The time period in which the book was written made this book an instant success as it became a bestseller among both British and American readers. The book is an allegory of the Cold War because the characters in the book form a political system that represents the political figures of the Cold War between liberal democracy and dictatorial communism. I think these had an impact on how the book was written because the characters in the book represent different political figures from the Cold War. For example, Ralph represents liberal democracy because he is the leader of the boys on the island. Jack symbolizes the communist system between the United States and the British during the Cold War. For example, in the book, Jack objects to Ralph being the leader because he created the communist society. The author somehow shows that Jack represents the anti-democratic political system because in the novel he represents it as a Western point of the Cold War. Lord of the Flies also symbolizes a dystopian society because it was written during the beginning of the Cold War, which was also a dystopian era. I believe the time period in which Lord of the Flies was written correlates with how the novel was written, as it characterizes some of the political figures of the Cold War, and William Golding takes Ralph and Jack to compare the two different parts of the Cold War. 2: ...... middle of paper ...... on Bergeron because they were under the control of their trainer while the citizens of Harrison Bergeron were under the control of their government. The underlying meaning of the quote is that each one of us can change this world, but it depends on how we show our talent to others. For example, in the film, the ghostwriter said that his greatest fear was whether he could show his talent to others. Additionally, if we start to shine on our own, others might do the same, thus we are paving the way for our society. In the film and in Harrison Bergeron, the characters are under someone's control, but that doesn't mean they can't show their power and talent to others. He sees children as a personification of power because children when born did not face any challenges, so if each of us tries to shine on our own we can change this world..
