Essay / Does terrorism still need the media? - 1449
Terrorism, Internet and social mediaTo create narratives, terrorists and extremists use the Internet and social media very well (Zacharia 2012). They know and realize that the Internet can reach a greater number of audiences, even in their private spaces. Additionally, the existence of social media has given terrorists greater access to communicate directly with their followers, followers, and future recruits. Gabriel Weimann of the Department of Communication at the University of Haifa estimates that 90% of organized terrorist activity on the Internet takes place on social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Youtube and many others (Lapin 2012). On these social media sites, they recruit, inspire and guide global strategies not only through Internet operations, but also through a curated and ongoing infusion of propaganda videos and call-to-action messages distributed via social media platforms (Kunkle 2012). Therefore, from this perspective, it is true that “the important role that the Internet and social networking sites play in advancing violent extremist narratives” (House 2011: 9; in Neumann 2013: 432). Concerning terrorism and the Internet, Weimann (2006) distinguishes between activities aimed at generating support and generating publicity (communicative uses) and those which encourage acts of terrorism (instrumental uses). First, “communicative uses” refer to cases where terrorists use the Internet to reach their audience. Due to its ability to reach large numbers of people, the Internet is used by terrorists and violent extremists to publish and expose their causes. Additionally, they also generate political support and recruit new followers on the Internet. Second, terrorists are in the middle of the paper and train their members, communicate and conspire, plan and launch attacks. The Internet has been a great tool for terrorists and violent extremists to reach their audiences, but it is likely that they still need mass media to gain enormous publicity. It is true that they can now bypass the media by creating their own channel on the Internet, but in reality, since there are certain restrictions and limitations on the Internet, they cannot fully rely on it. The Internet can be important in reaching their subscribers and supporters; however, terrorists and violent militants would still need the media to generate messages of terror; to create a state of fear. Another reason is that governments or corporations usually own mass media. Coverage of terrorist attacks by mass media also signifies the symbol of the victory of terrorism over governments and the public..
