Essay / As a result, the state's basis on the perception of others would be compromised and weakened. Hawthorne's depiction of faith is symbolic throughout the story, the faith "the woman was rightly". Similarly, Hawthorne again uses faith symbolically to represent Goodman Brown's own faith in God. At the beginning of the story, we see Faith begging Goodman Brown not to go on a trip but to stay home with her. Hawthorne shows that Goodman has a strong faith before leaving on his journey and sometimes into the deep forests, by the way he responds to faith to reassure that his faith will not be weakened by anything he encounters during his journey, declares the author. "'Amen!' cried Goodman Brown, 'Say your prayers, dear Faith, and go to bed at dusk, and no harm will come to you'" (Hawthorne). We therefore see that Goodman Brown not only knows the consequences he will encounter, but he welcomes them because of the curiosity and the will that ignite his heart. The first time Goodman Brown is approached by the dark figure that is the devil himself in the forest and told why he is late, Goodman Brown responds, "Faith kept come back to me for a moment »(Hawthorne). Hawthorne once again uses the wife to symbolize young Goodman Brown's faith. He shows us that Goodman Brown had to compromise her to even go into the forest. Goodman Brown sees many figures heading towards the meeting place and is surprised to see that many of them are people of great stature, both in religious and governmental society. Here, Hawthorne shows that all people are sinners, regardless of their outward appearance or the position they hold in society. When Goodman Brown sees Goody Cloyse, he was also shocked to see her, he states "should be so far out in the wilderness by nightfall" (Hawthorne), contrary to the fact that Close is his spiritual advisor who had taught him her catechism and can't believe she would be out so late. Hawthorne describes her as a “very pious and exemplary lady” (Hawthorne). The catechism is the teaching of the Bible in the Christian religion, but it varies according to the different denominations because the Puritans had their doctrine. Hawthorne would suggest that Goodman Brown's faith begins to weaken after seeing Goody Cloyse's broadcasts that
