    During colonial times in America, the practice of slavery was harsh and terrifying. The treatment of slaves was terrible, especially towards women. Women were historically treated as inferior to men, especially if they were black slaves. The book “Chica Da Silva: An 18th Century Brazilian Slave Girl” written by JF Furtado poses a challenge to the above-mentioned views. In Furtado's book we meet the character of Chica da Silva, a woman born from slavery, who, against all odds, became one of the most influential people in society.
