Gender Equality in Sports “All men are created equal” is a quote from Thomas Jefferson stated in the Declaration of Independence that has survived many centuries and is still memorable today. What is missing in this sentence is equal rights for both women and men. Since this quote was written, times have changed dramatically and women have gained these rights. Although many people see equality between men and women in today's era, it is not yet present in the world of sports. Men and women have very different roles and expectations in the world of sport. Title IX was introduced to address the issues, but unequal treatment between the sexes still exists. Although Title IX resolved many conflicts surrounding women's teams, not all schools followed the rules set for them. The persistence of unequal treatment between the sexes in the world of sport has led to unfair advantages for men, unequal sponsorship income and mistreatment of athletes of the opposite sex who dominate the sport. Aside from the educational aspects of gender equality, many professional sports teams are part of this abuse. Because men's sports are more popular, "men's highlights are broadcast daily on sports coverage networks, while women's sports are rarely picked up" (McCullick). Popular sports television channels broadcast male-dominated sports more frequently than female-dominated sports. In another article, the author addresses the subject of ski jumping at the Olympic Games. For women to be treated equally, they must be given equal opportunities to showcase their strengths.
