Essay / The use of the supernatural in Wuthering Heights by...
The supernatural is used extensively in "Wuthering Heights" and plays a large role in determining the outcome of the story. The Victorians were very superstitious about the supernatural. Education had already become commonplace in Victorian England, and education was met with skepticism. The majority of people were very skeptical of the supernatural, but non-believers were not due to the number of ghost stories that were coming up at that time. The Victorian era was an important period in which perceptions of people and ghosts changed dramatically, from partial belief in ghosts to no belief in them at all, while still being terrified of them. This clearly explains Heathcliff's reaction to seeing Cathy's ghost. At first, the book was perceived as shocking and inappropriate by all its readers. When the book was first published, readers at the time considered it extremely scandalous. Despite the fact that the novel demonstrates no bloodshed or sex, its depiction of Cathy and Heathcliff's passionate love affair was considered highly inappropriate and ignored for some time. Bronte, however, uses the supernatural throughout the entirety of the novel. she uses it in unconventional ways. Heathcliff is not “supernatural” in the sense that he is paranormal, but in the sense that he appears superhuman. He appears bigger, stronger and greater than everything and everyone around him. Much of the novel's chilling power lies in the fact that Heathcliff is ultimately still flesh and blood. Therefore, the horror and brutality of his actions make him seem supernatural (due to their severity). Heathcliff's malevolence proves great and lasting, as evidenced by his abuse of Isabella, whom he himself describes as purely... middle of paper...... e supernatural. Towards the end however, the reader does not know whether Heathcliff is dead or not. "But the country people, if you asked them, would swear on the Bible that he walks..." suggests that his ghost is present, but before that Brontë does not suggest that the villagers are superstitious, so there is a chance. that these sightings were not real. In conclusion, Bronte uses the supernatural and ghosts in Wuthering Heights to highlight the power of love between Cathy and Heathcliff and prove that love exists beyond the grave and that the quality of love is endless. Additionally, ghosts are used to aid in the storytelling, to help enhance the setting and develop characterization, particularly in the character of Heathcliff, Nelly and Lockwood. The use of the supernatural allows the reader to be intrigued by the confusing use of extraordinary beings..
