IntroductionMany books have been written on the life of Imam Ali bin Abu Abi Talib, his succession to the Caliphate, his disagreements, negotiations and decisions. Old and new libraries are full of countless writings, studies and research on the imam. The purpose of this book is not to provide a review of the incidents, study the decisions, or analyze the actions taken by Imam Ali. The book also does not aim to support or refute what has been written about the imam. Regardless of the source of what has been written about him, all authors seem to agree on the imam's bold Islamic spirit, his courage, his strength, his wise counsel and the ingenuity of his opinions. No one ever doubted that Imam Ali bin Abu Abi Talib slept on the bed of Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) on the night of the Hegira (migration), that he knew about the conspiracy of Quraish against life of the Prophet and that he was the first child to accept Islam. Anyone who reads Al-Tabari's tarikh al- umam wa-al-muluk (History of Nations and Kings) or Al-Tabar's nahj al-balagha (Peak of Eloquence) or the writings of Sheikh Mohammad Abdo or 'Abbas Al-Aqqad or Abod Hassan Al-Zayyat as well as hundreds of other studies on Imam Ali, will immediately realize that the Imam was a person of knowledge, chastity, wisdom, rectitude and ingenuity. He was a man of economics and politics who combined both worldly needs and the demands of the afterlife. Furthermore, the imam defined the pillars and principles of the different sciences (psychology, economics, politics, decision-making, crisis management and negotiations) and he laid the foundations of the principles of sovereignty a thousand years before the Six Books of the History of Jean Bodin.
