Essay / Analyzing the Rail Switch Dilemma - 961
If an action can satisfy the categorical imperative, then it is a good choice. According to Kant, "The general idea behind the categorical imperative is that you should not act from reasons that you would not want to be a universal law...so, in essence, you should not do what you would not want to do." the others do…” (Philosophyfactory paragraph 4). In other words, would you always choose the common good over this one (pulling the lever on the railroad switch)? On the other hand, as I suggest what Alex should do, (not pull the lever of the train switch), choose the value of one rather than choosing to kill and end a life. The choice Alex faces is whether to choose to end his life by pulling the lever on the train switch rather than doing nothing and letting fate unfold, which would ultimately result in the deaths of five people on the train.
