Essay / The Political and Governmental System of Canada - 997
The political and government systems of Canada, although very similar to ours here in the United States, are rather different and, of course, have their own history and parties that compete for control in debates and elections. Much like our country, Canada's two main political parties are the Liberals and Conservatives, but others have emerged over the years and the country has moved from a two-party system to the multi-party system it now calls the his. , as you may already know, is a democracy. Its first system consisted of two parties, the Conservative Party and the Liberal Party. John A. Macdonald led the Conservatives for the first years after forming their first government, but the Liberal Party took power after an event known as the Pacific Scandal. The Pacific Scandal was an unfortunate event where a man named Sir Hugh Allan bribed the Conservative Party when it was in a time of financial need. They rewarded him with a contract to build a railroad, on the condition that he remove all American control over the contract. However, he was unable to meet this requirement because he had used American money to fund the Conservative campaign in the first year. After the Liberal Party exposed the scandal in April 1873, Macdonald was forced to resign and the Liberals took power. However, in 1878, Macdonald returned and led the Conservative Party until his death in 1891. After his death, the Conservative Party began to collapse and changed leaders several times, before 1896 when the Liberal Party, with Wilfrid Laurier to the presidency, once again regained power. In the 1920s, more and more parties began to form, creating a sort of "two and a half party system...... middle of paper...... after 35 years, the colonies French populations suddenly expanded, rivaling the populations of their foreign counterparts. Countries continued to push for space, expanding their colonies until Canada's eventual independence in 1867. Canada is a country with a rich history and a strong political system. Its history and systems mirror those of the United States in many ways, but Canada is undoubtedly a country in its own right. It has been influenced by many European countries over the years, through colonization and immigration, and the people who spoke out through their political parties shaped the country into the Canada we know today. -parties-and-party-system-history-canada-operation-and-issues http://www.canada.ca/aboutgov-ausujetgouv/structure/menu-eng.html http://www.slmc.uottawa .ca /?q=European_colonization
