Death by Unintentional InjuryIntroductionGlobally, there is an alarming trend where what appear to be harmless accidents claim the lives of thousands of people each year. However, the loss of life and human potential is unacceptable. These unintentional injury deaths take a myriad of forms highlighted by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). With the guidelines provided by these organizations, public health nurses (PHNs) can help develop and execute strategies to reduce the number of lives lost to unintentional injuries. Framework In the ongoing war to improve population health in the United States, there is a developing resource for Americans. Healthy People 2020 (HP 2020) is a broad combined effort of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, federal agencies, public stakeholders, and an advisory committee that uses the social determinants of health as a framework, to help to the transformation of the world. United States to a society in which people live long and healthy lives. HHS is using HP 2020 to provide a renewed focus on identifying, measuring, tracking, and reducing health disparities through a health-enhancing approach. HP 2020 is based on 4 previous healthy people initiatives: the 1979 Surgeon General's Report, Healthy People: The Surgeon General's Report on Health Promotion and Disease Prevention; Healthy People 1990: Promoting health/preventing disease: goals for the nation; Healthy People 2000: National goals for health promotion and disease prevention; and Healthy People 2010 (HP 2010): Targets for improving health. The multi-year process that is HP 2020 reflects input from a diverse group of organizations...... middle of document...... in fact, many of these programs once existed in schools and centers community, but due to lack of funding has been reduced or deemed non-essential. By focusing on schools and community centers, PHN can influence change among younger generations and, in doing so, influence change among older generations by spreading personal safety interests and concerns through education and mentoring, which would positively influence the development of personal responsibility. Companies that demonstrate positive changes or maintain a high degree of control/effectiveness of the security program may be eligible for tax breaks or other financial rewards. The development of these programs will result in changes due to repetition and familiarity of work, and will trickle down to younger generations through appropriate mentoring, with the overall effect of increasing individual personal responsibility..
