If I am asked for my opinion on something, I will say what I think in a positive form. An example of my honesty is when my sister asked me about her art work. I'm not an artist, but I can say what pleases my own eyes. I looked at the images and decided things I thought would look better a little differently. Then I would tell him what I thought was a better option here and there, but I would also tell him what part of the images was good and why I thought the changes would enhance the piece. The best way to be honest, I find, is not to be direct, but to be kind and allow for the positive.
