Essay / My journey as a doctor and my future plans
I first expressed my interest in becoming a doctor at the age of nine. My parents were amused but permissive. To get a pragmatic idea of the profession of a doctor, I decided to volunteer for a few hours a week in a retirement home for the elderly. I took care of entertaining some of the more infirm elderly people. This brought to my attention the unpleasant side of medicine. While medicine has exciting moments of discovery, it also requires confronting the darker side, such as the fragility and discomfort of patients. I also realized that I was capable of dealing with changing situations. I learned to empathize and respond accordingly to the thoughts and actions of older people. I noticed the need to understand the unique requirements of each individual and the importance of building trust. I was amazed at how the elderly patients on the wards showed their respect and gratitude to the volunteers, nurses and visiting doctors. This piqued my interest in being part of a dynamic field. I also interacted with specialists and was impressed by their dedication as they sometimes traveled at supernatural hours to offer treatments, giving importance to work over personal matters. Having heard and seen their experience, I understand that the career can be both challenging and rewarding. I understand that the field of medicine is subject to frequent change and advancement as scientists discover new trends and develop new methods to help doctors and patients. This understanding inspired me to enroll in a medical research internship. I understood that in the field of medicine, doctors are a beacon of trust and responsibility. I recognized my ability to act responsibly when I realized that the published results of my experiments directly impacted the scientific community and more broadly the patient population. Even under these pressured circumstances, I remained true to my goals and lucidly formulated hypotheses, planned experiments, and analyzed the results. I realized the importance of teamwork in my journey. Regardless, I could not reach any stage of advancement. I learned the need to work with my counterparts.
