    According to Becker (1991), “deviance is, among other things, a consequence of the response of others to a person's act” (p. 40). What he is saying is that what we do does not make us deviant. This shows that deviance varies from place to place and from time to time. For example, during Prohibition, it was illegal for businesses to sell alcohol. This would make you a criminal and therefore a deviant. Today, it is now legal for businesses to sell alcohol, meaning it is no longer a deviant act. This proves that deviance is a social consequence
